About Sonata

Sonata is a single serve coffee maker system designed to reliably provide a consistent customized coffee experience day after day.

Over the course of four weeks, I worked as part of a team of four students to design a coffee maker that was accessible to individuals with visual impairments.

Our research included user interviews, surveys, and patent studies. We also created a foamcore prototype and looked at the internal components of existing coffee makers to get an idea of what technology is needed to make the machine function the way we wanted. Through our collaboration, we arrived at a design that is elegant, thoughtful, and practical for both sighted and non-sighted individuals.

My responsibilities on this project included:

  • research

  • interface design

  • feasibility research

  • asset management

  • video and audio elements

Key Features:

  • Customization settings for serving size, temperature, and creamer amount.

  • Audio and LED feedback for users with either little or no vision.

  • Unique tones and notes are paired with each slider and position to provide a unique “coffee melody” for each setting combination.

  • Built-In creamer storage bottle is cooled by the machine to prevent spoilage and simplify the process.

  • Tactile buttons and clear layout allows navigation by tough

  • Info button reads back setting measurements
